“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 NIV
Wounds hurt. We don’t like pain. We are anxious to be healed. We hope that the resulting scar will be minimal, unnoticeable. It might be. It all depends on how deep the injury is and how well it heals.
I have worked in the field of plastic surgery and dermatology for over twenty years. In our office we have seen all types of injuries. From the clean-cut of a surgeon's scalpel to the jagged tear of a dog bite or deep incision made to remove a cancerous growth, wounds come in all shapes and sizes.
Living in Las Vegas, as a result of the recent attack on our city, I’m sad to say that we have seen our share of gunshot wounds as well, some leaving the victim maimed or disfigured for life.
Permanent Scars
In my experience, I have learned that minor cuts sometimes form unsightly scars, while more severe wounds might result in relatively small ones.
How a person heals physically depends on several factors. Genetics, skin type and color, overall health, and how they care for their wounds all effect the outcome of how the person will heal and, ultimately, scar.
For some people, their wounds resist healing. For others, it’s as though their bodies don’t know how to stop healing. Their scars become inflamed, thick, and hardened. Some heal perfectly.
A good physician can help control the conditions that determine how the wound will heal. They advise the patient on how to clean and care for the injury, to look for signs of infection, and keep watch that the wound may not be healing properly.
“He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.” Psalm 107:20 NIV
Jesus is our healer. He heals our physical wounds and the emotional ones, those hidden, visible only to the One who knows us on the inside. He sees those wounds that bring with them a pain so real and raw, we fear they will never heal.
Our Lord knows what or who harmed us. He feels our hurt. He understands the source of our pain. What may seem to be only a flesh wound to one hurting soul may be a critical injury to another.
Our Lord knew we would be hurt deeply in this life. And while He could have prevented the pain and brokenness from entering our lives in the first place, He chose instead to be the Healer of our hurts.
Healing from the Inside Out
Our Master Physician knows how to heal our deepest wounds and leave us without a scar or even a mark. Carefully, He reaches down into our souls and pours out His healing balm, relieving the sting of our burning and broken hearts.
With kindness and compassion, He sends His word to heal us and His Spirit to comfort us. Wisely, He reveals His love for us in both our hurting and our healing.
The One who knit us together in our mother’s womb, created us to depend on Him for our healing. He knew we would be hurt, sometimes deeply. He heals completely, without leaving the slightest scar.
When Jesus allows pain into our lives, it’s to draw us back to Him. In our suffering, we learn to look to no one but Him, not even ourselves, for healing.
As you look at your physical scars, take time to reflect on the deeper invisible wounds. Be reminded that your Lord longs to heal your hurting heart and bind up your wounds. There is no wound too deep for the love of our Great Physician to reach. Remove the temporary bandage and give your hurts and aches to Him. He will heal you.
You have only to ask.
Dear Jesus,
Lord of our hearts and lives. We give you our pain, our wounds, our broken hearts. We pray and ask you to restore that which was broken. Pour out your love and mercy into our hearts and heal us from the inside out. We praise you and receive your healing.
Amen.
Beautiful Blessings, Dawn
